Tirana Trails

The soft hills, the ancient villages, the olive groves, the Mediterranean scents, the looming castles, the monuments, the caves, the forests, the lakes, and overall, the idyllic landscapes, offer an unused opportunity to build new social and economic prospects for rural and urban Tirana.

Tirana Trails has two main objectives:

1) Develop a sustainable and inclusive outdoor tourism sector in Tirana;

2) Create new socio-economic opportunities for the rural communities of Tirana.

Other objectives include creating a culture for outdoor exploration, building of social cohesion, raising awareness and protecting the environment, and improving the image of Tirana.
Tirana Trails will consist of a main trail that goes through the villages of Petrela, Mullet, Arbana, Ndroq, Peze, Vaqarr, Kashar, Paskuqan, Shishtufine, Zallherr, Linze, Farke, Lunder and completing the loop in Petrela.
In addition to the main trail connecting these villages, many quality loop walks from these villages will lead to picturesque locations nearby. These locations are either historical/ archaeological (e.g. the Bride’s Tomb in Petrela, the Obelisque of Feti Vogli, the Faucet of Mamica, etc), or nature/ landscape sites (the Cave of Pellumbas, the Lake of Gurra, Vrapi Waterfall, the Eye of the Cyclops, etc).

Tirana Trails will be marked and will have a branded signage system, with clear directions in Albanian and English. Local residents will be trained on services, hospitality, tour guiding, promotion, etc. APR will be in charge of maintaining and promoting Tirana Trails after it is built.
As demonstrated in studies in Finland and in France the economic impact of trails is such that return on investment is manifold, going primarily to the public through taxes; the communities that trails touch prosper through income generated from the sale of food, equipment, lodging, tour guiding, etc.
Trails are not only economically, but also environmentally sustainable. Although studies have not been yet done, similar success stories can be found in Albania as well: Peaks of the Balkans trail (especially the village of Theth), funded by the German Cooperation agency GIZ, and the Rural Inclusive Social & Economic Opportunities project, implemented by the environmental organization Milieukontakt and funded by the Italian-Albanian Debt for Development Swap Agreement.

Beyond the main objectives, social cohesion will be an important element of the project; years of unevenly distributed economic opportunities and unrest have created huge socio-economic gaps between the different social groups, especially between rural and urban residents. Enabling human encounters, and giving the vulnerable groups such as women and youth new economic opportunities, will bring socio-economic progress to rural Tirana, and will help build a healthy social fabric of Tirana as a whole.

Tirana Trails will engage with local and world-renowned trail developers, to build Tirana Trails. The implementing team and its extended network counts with experience in successfully building trails in Albania and around the world. The stages of this project include:

1. Feasibility study and mapping [ALREADY STARTED WITH PARTNERS ALBANIA GRANT];

2. Building the infrastructure of Tirana Trails;

3. Trainings of the communities;

4. Promoting and marketing Tirana Trails.

The first phase of this project will result in full mapping of the trails, and creating a simple website and mobile application.
“Mapping Tirana Trails and making it accessible through a website and a mobile application” is supported through Embrace project, implemented by Partners Albania for Change and Development and financed by the European Union through the Delegation of European Union in Albania.

Innova Museums

In-Nova Partnership MusEUm experimented with new methods and approaches of audience development by developing concrete actions that aimed to build audience capacity within the Art & Food concept.

– The aim of the In-NovaMusEUm project was to create interaction approaches with museum visitors and to start a pilot phase that allowed the audience to be diversified.

Art and food are two necessary things for life. Visual arts have always had a special connection with the theme of food and the ritual of eating together. Rituals and symbols of food products have transcended all forms of art, from antiquity onwards.

Milan 2015 which, among other things, has inspired the exhibition “Arts and Foods”. Rituals since 1851 dedicated to places of food and its representation in paintings, sculptures, furniture and objects. This helped us to build a project about the importance of food for art. We decided to focus our project on European museums with outstanding collections that, due to their peripheral location or lack of audience development strategies do not take advantage of the tourist advantages of their location, therefore remain outside the main tourist flows and not very often affect the participation of the local community and inclusion in their cultural services. These museums (hereinafter referred to as “suburban museums”) face two levels of issues:

– Lack of approaches and methods of audience development to meet the needs of existing and potential audiences:

1 – low number of annual visitors

2 – low participation of the local community in museum programs.

The project, which lasted 18 months, was structured in five main points, including: training and research activity for the peripheral audience development strategy, the participatory event with the local and artistic community, digital engagement, European networking activities, and dissemination.

The partnership was made by 5 organizations, each of them with experience in a specific field related to the project area. In particular, the Innova Museum directly includes 2 partner Museums (Skoklostersslott Castle in Sweden and Theodoros Papagiannis Museum of Contemporary Art in Greece) and 5 affiliated Museums: Palazzo Chigi di Ariccia (Italy), Bordalo Pinheiro Museum (Portugal), Museum Greece), Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu National Museum (Kruja, Albania) Durres Archaeological Museum (Albania).

Museums of interest in Italy, Sweden, Portugal, Albania and Greece are indirectly involved.

Creative and participating laboratory Tirana Ekspres (Albania) and C&K R&D Unit of Lusofona University of Lisbon act as technical partners together with the Department of Cultural Heritage Management (University of Patras).

FACTORY of MEMORIES

Albania is a country in the middle of the Balkans that is considered somewhat of a ”white dot” on the European map. It has been isolated for four decades. After the communist period and the riots of the 1990s of economic collapse and armed insurgency in 1997, Albania is still a country in transition as it is undergoing this shift and trying to find its identity in a European context. For centuries, Albanians have lived scattered throughout the region now considered the Western Balkans. The ”Factory of Memories” project is dedicated to analyzing this Albanian collective memory in a cinematic and artistic way and aims to organize a cross-border short film competition. It is clearly aimed at young filmmakers,originating from Albania and its neighboring regions in Kosovo and Macedonia. An interesting and provocative element of the dialogue will be the comparison of how diverse historical experiences created commonalities, as well as different perceptions of Albanian collective memories and how these are currently being processed in relevant social contexts.

Summary of project objectives: Following the distribution of the call for participants, the artists will be selected to participate in three expert-led work on collective remembrance, as well as filmmaking practices. Each participant will then produce his / her short film and submit it to the competition. All compiled films will be presented at the short film festival during the summer of 2014 – taking place at the cultural center ”Tirana Ekspres” in Tirana, Albania. A jury of five experts will select the three winning films according to the set criteria. After that, a DVD with all the contributions will be produced to be sent on a tour across the border – across the region.

The aim of the Project is to mobilize and engage emerging artists together with the public. By inviting artists to portray the past, the ”Factory of Memories” aspires to confront Albanians with their past. In this way the project will create bridges of communication between different perspectives to help develop a complete and inclusive collective memory.

The ”Factory of Memories” will create space for different artistic interpretations, independent and dialogue, creating benefits for the participating artists. In addition to promoting these artists, the initiative aims to contribute to the exchange of ideas, as well as to the establishment of cooperation and partnership between the various cultural institutionsinvolved – and ultimately an annual implementation of the Project.
